After Michele left, Dan headed for the water dispenser, next to the snack vending machine. Walking past it, he scanned its offerings and turned back to face them head on. Ever since his nutritionist handed him a list of what he could and could not eat, a blazing poster size image of this machine was branded in his memory – its peanut butter crackers, M&Ms, Twizzlers, trail mix, Clark Bars, Reese’s Pieces, Lay’s Potato Chips, Fritos, and Snickers.
The moment he read his nutrition plan, even though he had just eaten, he felt hungry and deprived. Now, in the second week of his diet, he had gained three pounds. He’d calculated that if he continued at that rate, he would weigh 300 pounds in a year. That math eluded him now as he fumbled for change.
